Louis van Gaal's side edged closer to the Champions League group stages after Depay scored his first two goals for the club and Fellaini added a gloss

Memphis Depay scored a superb brace as Manchester United beat Club Brugge 3-1 and took a huge step towards reaching the Champions League group stage. The Belgians took a surprise first-half lead when Victor Vazquez whipped in a free-kick and Michael Carrick deflected it past Sergio Romero. But just five minutes later Depay netted his first goal for United to level the scores. The Dutchman danced passed Dion Cools and Oscar Duarte before firing low into the corner of the goal from inside the box.And just before half time Depay gave United the lead. This time he cut in from the left and shot from distance, bending the ball into the top corner from 20 yards out.In the final minute of added time Marouane Fellaini then added a third. The visitors' misery was completed when defender Brandon Mechele saw red for two bookable offences. Here are five things we learned...: United took a huge step towards the Champions League group stage

Rooney needs competition
Rooney has only scored seven times for Manchester United in 2015. His last goal for them came at the beginning of April - he's played 10 games since then. He missed a good opportunity to score in the first minute when he failed to get on to the end of a Adnan Januzaj cross and missed a number of chances as the night progressed.Rooney's a superbly talented footballer but he's not in form and the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao have left him with no competition and Louis van Gaal with no plan B.Matthew PetersOut of form: Wayne Rooney has had a slow start to the season

Depay is a frightening talent
His first goal demonstrated incredible close control and composure, dribbling past two defenders before waiting for the perfect moment to bury his shot. His second showed rare technique with a stunning long-range shot. It's clear he has a natural talent absent in all but the world's best players. And he's only 21

Januzaj is taking his chance
With no goals and only 22 appearances last season. Januzaj must have wondered if he had any future under Van Gaal. He's now started the last two games and impressed in both. He bagged the winner against Aston Villa at the weekend and was causing Brugge problems within the first minute at Old Trafford.Spending last season as he did, always coming off the bench, it seemed there was no real defined role for him in the side. That's clearly changed, and the 20-year-old is benefitting.

United still look vulnerable
Don't be fooled by the two clean sheets in the Premier League, this defence is far from the finished article. Matteo Darmian is a great signing and Luke Shaw is finally starting to look like the player he was at Southampton, but Chris Smalling is still Chris Smalling and Daley Blind isn't really a centre-back.United will be (rightly) disappointed to have conceded against Brugge but they should also consider themselves fortunate the visitors didn't score more. They easily could have. There wasn't enough communication between Sergio Romero and his defence at Old Trafford. Considering there are no real leaders in that back four, that's a cause for concern.

Carrick's place is under scrutiny
Even without the own goal, Carrick didn't have a good game and was subbed at half time for Bastian Schweinsteiger. He and the German are effectively competing for the same position, with the more defensive-minded Morgan Schneiderlin appearing to have nailed down his spot.Carrick has been excellent for United over the past 12 months but he may struggle to hold on to his place when Schweinsteiger reaches full fitness.
