Manchester United's Champions League scorers Memphis Depay and Marouane Fellaini were pleased to give the Reds a commanding lead going into the second leg of this play-off tie next Wednesday.
Memphis struck his first competitive goals for the club – two stunning strikes – while Marouane Fellaini added much-needed security to the scoreline given Club Brugge bagged a lucky away goal, a first-half free-kick which deflected off Adnan Januzaj and Michael Carrick before beating Sergio Romero.
Memphis said of his two first-half strikes: “I ended last season with a lot of goals. If you come to a big club you have to score and do the job again and it’s a nice feeling to score at Old Trafford, my first two goals.”
But he could have had a hat-trick when Luke Shaw’s cross and Wayne Rooney’s flick presented him with a much easier scoring opportunity than the long-range chances he converted in the first half.
“That’s why I am a little bit disappointed," he admitted. "I’ll forget it tomorrow but tonight I will think about that last chance,” he told BT Sport. “I’m happy of course with the score and that we won the game.
“It was really important to score the last goal from Fellaini. We created a lot of chances and I’m disappointed I couldn’t finish those two chances. But it was a good result and we have to travel to Bruges and finish the job over there.”
Fellaini admitted his late header was also crucial: “I think it was important to score a third goal and we did, so that’s fantastic. It’s a win but now we have to be careful in Bruges. Normally it would be not easy, but we have the quality to win there as well.”
Asked if his late goal would prove unpopular in his native Belgium, Marouane simply said: “I don’t care, the most important thing today is the win. But we have to be careful in the second leg and, as I said, we will press them and we have the quality to win there as well. So, we have to be ready.”
