The Latin heat was in full flame on the American Idol season 14 finale Wednesday night, with performances from Prince RoyceJennifer Lopez,Pitbull and Ricky Martin rivaling some of the best Latin momentsof the reality TV singing competition's past seasons.
Contestants, judges, and special musical guests all had a chance to shine onstage, starting with Tyanna Jones, who placed fifth this season. Jones kicked the night off with help from The Jacksons, followed by the ladies of the Top 12, who joined the legendary Nile Rodgers for a throwback medley.
Next up was Martin, who unveiled his new English-language single "Mr. Put It Down." Flanked by able-bodied dancers, the boricua took it back to his "Livin' La Vida Loca" days and indulged us with some of his most danceable hits, including "She Bangs" and "Cup of Life." (You know William Hung was somewhere, smiling.) Contestants Clark Beckham, this season's champ Nick Fradiani, Quentin Alexander, Qaasim Middleton and Rayvon Owen happily backed him up on vocals.
We barely caught our breath from Martin's hot moves when Janelle Monáeappeared onstage for her crown-rocking "Yoga" number, after which Royce made his debut on the Idol stage, but not before introducing himself as "your new boyfriend."
The bachatero was in good company while singing his newest bilingual single "Back It Up," as J.Lo did just that in a hot little black number and a pair of fierce Giuseppe Zanotti heels. "Damelo Papi Chulo!" proclaimed the Bronx diva, and just like that, Mr. Worldwide magically appeared, ending the song with a few feel-good bars.
Later in the night -- after a slew of performances from the likes of Jamie Foxx,Chris Brown with Pitbull, Steven Tyler, and yes, even New Kids on the Block -- Lopez returned to the stage with fellow judges Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr.for a stellar cover of Rihanna's "Diamonds" and Bruno Mars' "Locked out of Heaven."
The performance comes a night after Lopez announced that she's headed to Las Vegas in Jan. 2016 for a residency at Planet Hollywood.
