Paul Scholes was “encouraged” by Manchester United’s performance against PSV, he told BT Sport (via Mail).
The midfielder-turned-pundit saw his old side lose 2-1 in their first group stage game, following a season out of European competition. Though the result was weak, Scholes thought United’s play was strong.
Speaking after the game at the Philips Stadion – which lasted 100 minutes after a horrific injury to Luke Shaw – Scholes was unusually positive in regards to the Red Devils’ display:
“You probably think I’m mental, but I was encouraged. They shouldn’t have lost the game.
“I thought they played really well, and just lacked it in the final third. It’s not a great night, but I thought they looked dangerous and they have something to build on.
“Juan Mata found it difficult to have an influence on the game in the number 10 role. I think Wayne Rooney comes straight back into that position.”
